ODeSe: On-Demand Selection for multi-path RPL networks

The Internet of Things (IoT) has become ubiquitous due to its flexibility, ease-of-use, and reduced cost. As a consequence, the industry is adopting these systems in transformation into Industry 4.0. However, strict Quality Service (QoS) requirements are not met with default best-effort provisions IoT. Most industrial applications require guarantees terms end-to-end network reliability latency. For instance, consecutive packet losses can lead communication disruptions supply chain systems. Therefore, adaptations being made fulfill IEEE Std 802.15.4-2015 Time slotted Channel Hopping (TSCH) link-layer standard IPv6 Routing Protocol for Low-Power Lossy Networks (RPL) at Engineering Task Force (IETF). even by employing such protocols, it still difficult achieve expected QoS levels. Considering that RPL constructs maintains single-path from source destination if there potential issues on this path (e.g., queue overflow, variable wireless link quality) packets may suffer unexpected delays drops. If we consider multi-path implementation where each node replicate several paths, transmission improves since copy used forward information. uncontrolled replication flooding, resulting excessive power consumption. In article, present On-Demand Selection (ODeSe), novel routing algorithm, which our previous work, Common Ancestor (CA) algorithms, selecting most suitable upward forwarders. Moreover, use Packet Automatic Repeat reQuest, Replication Elimination, Overhearing (PAREO) functions order improve availability. control number relay nodes during transmission, ODeSe forces same level select Preferred Parent (PP) Alternative (AP). Thus, address trade-off between total traversed high reliability. Using Cooja simulator running Contiki OS, compare against different alternative parent selection algorithms. results demonstrate outperforms reliability, energy consumption while maintaining 99.14% delivery ratio.
